3 strikes you're out….. then you're banned. It all started on November 28th, 1931 when a 17 year old girl pitcher by the name of Virne Beatrice “Jackie” Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in exhibition games. Though back in that time period the thought of a female athlete being better in a sport than professional males athletes started the big controversy for women being able to playing baseball. The baseball commissioner by the name of Kennesaw Mountain Landis decided to ban women from professional baseball all together. This didn’t set very well with many women throughout the country who wanted to play baseball, so this ban lasted until 1943 when women were able to start an All American Girls’ Baseball League. The only reason behind the ban being lifted was because of the fact that the league needed the stadiums to be filled with games since many men were heading to war. Though this didn’t stop the women from accepting this opportunity since during the ban they were treated unfairly just because of their gender but also because some men felt they were the best at everything and couldn’t let anyone, especially a woman, show them up in their own sport. But Women did not back down and made sure that they kept their rights known which led to the game most girls and women play today.
